Reliability of thyroid doses due to 131I intake exceeding 5 Gy in a cohort of Belarusian children exposed to Chernobyl fallout

Tatiana Kukhta et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on thyroid doses due to I-131 intake among individuals exposed to Chernobyl fallout, showing a high reliability of doses calculated for the Belarusian-American cohort members. The analysis revealed that 3 out of 131 study subjects were mistakenly assigned thyroid measurements, affecting the accuracy of their estimated thyroid doses.

Radiation Exposure to the Thyroid After the Chernobyl Accident

Vladimir Drozdovitch

Summary: The Chernobyl accident led to significant release of radioactive material, especially I-131, causing increased thyroid cancer and diseases. Individual and population-average thyroid doses varied, with I-131 intake being the main exposure pathway. Individual doses due to different exposure pathways had uncertainties associated with them.

Thyroid doses in Ukraine due to I-131 intake after the Chornobyl accident. Report II: dose estimates for the Ukrainian population

Sergii Masiuk et al.

Summary: The thyroid dosimetry system in Ukraine was revised using new data, with thyroid doses estimated based on three levels of I-131 thyroid activity measurements. The average thyroid dose due to I-131 intake was 0.23 Gy, with over 99.8% of individuals receiving doses less than 5 Gy. The revised system is used for post-Chornobyl radiation epidemiological studies.
