Too Much of a Good Thing? Assessing Performance Tradeoffs of Two-Electron Compounds for Redox Flow Batteries

Bertrand J. Neyhouse et al.

Summary: Engineering redox-active compounds for stable multi-electron transfer is a strategy to enhance energy density and reduce cost in redox flow batteries. However, disparate redox potentials in sequential electron transfers lead to performance tradeoffs, limiting design space. Theoretical models show that multi-electron compounds with concerted electron transfer are more attractive than those with different redox potentials.

Organic molecules as bifunctional electroactive materials for symmetric redox flow batteries: A mini review

Gabriel Sikukuu Nambafu

Summary: Symmetric flow battery technology uses a single electroactive material, avoiding cross-contamination issues and providing a feasible pathway for high-performance energy storage devices. The review discusses representative bipolar/bifunctional redox active organic molecules and the current status of symmetric organic redox flow batteries, as well as addressing current challenges and potential future research directions.

Cost and price projections of synthetic active materials for redox flow batteries

Thomas D. Gregory et al.

Summary: Synthetic organic and organometallic active materials for flow batteries offer a large design space based on solubility, redox potential, kinetic activity, and stability, with price being a key metric. The estimated cost of manufacturing and sales price for anthraquinones and ferrocyanides as active materials were discussed, with considerations such as production volume and preferred routes to cost-effective materials.
