Effects of long-term straw return on soil organic carbon fractions and enzyme activities in a double-cropped rice paddy in South China

Huang Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term rice straw management on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, related enzyme activities, and their relationships. Results showed that long-term straw return improved total organic carbon (TOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in double-cropped rice paddies, while straw burned return had varying effects on different SOC fractions. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was found to be the most sensitive indicator for assessing changes in SOC due to straw return. Additionally, soil enzyme activities were influenced by the different management practices, highlighting the need for further research on their impact on soil health.

Fenton chemistry and reactive oxygen species in soil: Abiotic mechanisms of biotic processes, controls and consequences for carbon and nutrient cycling

Guang-Hui Yu et al.

Summary: Fenton reactions play a significant role in the decomposition of organic matter in soil, with the mechanisms depending on the sources and pathways of reactive oxygen species. These reactions are crucial for soil organic carbon cycling and can have a dual impact on OM mineralization and long-term carbon stabilization.

Extracellular enzyme activity and stoichiometry: The effect of soil microbial element limitation during leaf litter decomposition

Xuejuan Bai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal variability of soil microbial biomass and associated soil enzyme activities during leaf litter decomposition, highlighting how soil microorganisms maintain element homeostasis of C, N, and P by producing soil enzymes. Results showed that soil enzyme activities were highest in summer, while soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen peaked in winter. Significant effects of soil water content and temperature on soil enzyme activities and stoichiometry were observed, with changes in the stoichiometry of extracellular enzyme activities between different stages of litter decomposition. Strong positive correlations between microbial element limitation indicators and soil enzyme activities suggest that microorganisms allocate resources towards enzyme production to mine for scarce nutrients, contributing to element homeostasis maintenance.

Enzymatic Activity and Its Relationship with Organic Matter Characterization and Ecotoxicity to Aliivibrio fischeri of Soil Samples Exposed to Tetrabutylphosphonium Bromide

Arkadiusz Telesinski et al.

Summary: The study found that low doses of tetrabutylphosphonium bromide did not significantly impact soil parameters, but higher doses resulted in decreased enzyme activity, affected nitrogen cycle enzymes, and increased soil organic matter hydrophobicity. Additionally, soil samples exposed to high doses of the salt exhibited acute environmental hazard based on their toxicity to Aliivibrio fischeri, which was positively correlated with the activity of certain enzymes. The presence of tetrabutylphosphonium bromide may disturb the ecochemical state of the soil.

Long-term crop rotation and different tillage practices alter soil organic matter composition and degradation

Meiling Man et al.

Summary: Conservation agriculture practices such as conservation tillage and crop rotation can significantly impact the composition and turnover of soil organic matter (OM) at the molecular level. Long-term conservation tillage was found to result in changes in soil OM composition, affecting organic carbon concentrations and molecular-level composition, with microbial degradation and OM inputs from crop residues playing key roles. Additionally, interactions between diverse crop rotations and conservation tillage were found to reduce differences in specific groups of compounds, highlighting potential benefits for agricultural soil management.
