Covariance-Map Imaging: A Powerful Tool for Chemical Dynamics Studies

Claire Vallance et al.

Summary: The field of chemical reaction dynamics has seen rapid development over the past decade, shifting from studies of few-atom systems to investigations into photoinduced and collision-induced processes in larger molecules. Techniques such as velocity-map imaging and covariance mapping have allowed for a wide range of applications in atmospheric chemistry, astrochemistry, synthetic chemistry, and chemical biology. These advancements have also enabled the recording of complete product scattering distributions and correlations between reaction products in a single measurement.

Coulomb Explosion Dynamics of Chlorocarbonylsulfenyl Chloride

Graham A. Cooper et al.

Summary: The study investigated the Coulomb explosion dynamics of chlorocarbonylsulfenyl chloride after strong field ionization using multimass coincidence detection, covariance imaging analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Multiple dissociation channels from various charge states were observed, with double ionization leading to a dominant C-S cleavage channel, while triple ionization resulted in a double dissociation channel. Further ionization primarily led to atomic or diatomic fragments with relative momenta strongly dependent on the starting structure of the molecule.

Multi-channel photodissociation and XUV-induced charge transfer dynamics in strong-field-ionized methyl iodide studied with time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging

Felix Allum et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photodissociation dynamics of methyl iodide (CH3I) subjected to strong-field ionization using intense XUV radiation from SACLA, in conjunction with a femtosecond IR pulse. By conducting a multi-mass ion VMI experiment and analyzing the correlations between the momenta of different fragment ions through time-resolved recoil-frame covariance imaging, a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics was achieved. The results show promising evidence that these techniques can be applied with high count rates to study ultrafast photochemistry in various molecular systems using advanced light sources.

Strong-field ionization of water: Nuclear dynamics revealed by varying the pulse duration

A. J. Howard et al.

Summary: Polyatomic molecules in strong laser fields exhibit substantial nuclear motion within tens of femtoseconds. Short pulses show minimal internuclear motion before shutting off, while rapid motion occurs during double ionization in longer pulses. The results suggest a simple tunnel ionization model can help interpret the observed motion.
