Reaction acceleration at air-solution interfaces: Anisotropic rate constants for Katritzky transamination

Yangjie Li et al.

Summary: By studying the Katritzky transamination in levitated Leidenfrost droplets using mass spectrometry, it was found that the reaction rate in the surface region is significantly higher than in the interior, consistent with observations in bulk solutions. The differences in reaction rates observed with three pyrylium reagents with varying surface activity suggest that reactions with surface-active reactants are subject to greater acceleration, especially in systems with higher surface-to-volume ratios. These results highlight the crucial role of air-solution interfaces in accelerating Katritzky reactions, indicating that limited solvation at the interface may contribute to the increased rate constant of the reactions.

Variational design principles for nonequilibrium colloidal assembly

Avishek Das et al.

Summary: By utilizing large deviation theory and principles of stochastic optimal control, optimal forces for targeted self-assembly within nonequilibrium steady-states can be determined to enhance the stability of the target structure. Tunable complexity of specific short-range interactions allows for high yield assembly of colloidal clusters, with shear flow affecting the yield differently based on the rigidity of the clusters. The influence of shear on yield enhancement or suppression is rationalized through a generalized linear response theory, with basic design principles for targeted assembly out of equilibrium uncovered through the study of unique clusters.

Ion Dissociation Dynamics in an Aqueous Premelting Layer

Samuel P. Niblett et al.

Summary: Through molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the thermodynamics and dynamics of sodium chloride in the aqueous premelting layer formed spontaneously at the interface between ice and its vapor. We observed that ions distort local interfaces, resulting in restoring forces that cause ions to preferentially reside in the middle of the layer. The dissociation rate of ion pairs in the premelting layer is significantly affected by the structural and dynamic effects, leading to variations in rate throughout the layer.

Dissipation bounds the amplification of transition rates far from equilibrium

Benjamin Kuznets-Speck et al.

Summary: Complex systems have the ability to regulate the transition speed between different long-lived states by converting energy from nonequilibrium forces, but currently there is no general framework to relate the enhancement of transition rate to energy dissipation. Recent advances in stochastic thermodynamics have provided a framework that allows for a deeper understanding of transitions far from equilibrium, revealing a basic speed limit that relates heat dissipation to achievable rate amplification. This speed limit is shown to tightly constrain the rate enhancement in various examples of barrier crossings in systems driven by autonomous and deterministic external forces.

Reactive uptake of N2O5 by atmospheric aerosol is dominated by interfacial processes

Mirza Galib et al.

Summary: The study found that the uptake of N2O5 into aqueous aerosol is mainly influenced by interfacial processes, rather than the bulk of the aerosol. This discovery proposes a new interfacial reactive uptake model to explain existing experimental observations.

A Direct Probe of the Hydrogen Bond Network in Aqueous Glycerol Aerosols

Chaya Weeraratna et al.

Summary: Through techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and terahertz spectroscopy, it is found that aerosols generated from aqueous solutions of glycerol and water have a complex hydrogen bond network that is influenced by the mixing ratio. As the glycerol content increases, different configurations of the hydrogen bond network appear, eventually forming an aerosol resembling pure glycerol.

Critical Role of Thermal Fluctuations for CO Binding on Electrocatalytic Metal Surfaces

Wan-Lu Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of DFT in predicting CO binding trends on different metal surfaces by considering thermal fluctuations, with the B97M-rV functional showing better performance on all surfaces. Thermally induced surface distortions are shown to influence the accurate prediction of binding preferences on metal surfaces, highlighting the importance of accounting for finite temperature fluctuations in comparisons with experimental and application data.

Challenges for density functional theory: calculation of CO adsorption on electrocatalytically relevant metals

Christianna N. Lininger et al.

Summary: Density Functional Theory (DFT) is the most tractable choice for understanding mechanistic pathways in electrocatalytic processes like CO2 or CO reduction. The study found that the surface modified RPBE functional performs reliably in many benchmarks, while meta-GGA functionals also show promising results. Among them, B97M-rV predicts the correct site preference for CO binding on Ag and Au, while RTPSS performs well for surface relaxations and CO binding on Pt and Cu.

A chemically consistent graph architecture for massive reaction networks applied to solid-electrolyte interphase formation

Samuel M. Blau et al.

Summary: By introducing a chemically consistent graph architecture and iterative cost-solving procedure, we have overcome the limitations of current reaction networks, enabling the identification of low-cost pathways in massive reaction networks. Using this approach, we constructed the first electrochemical reaction network and investigated the formation of a key component, lithium ethylene dicarbonate, revealing both previously proposed mechanisms and novel pathways with counter-intuitive reactions that have not been reported in the literature. Our framework and data-driven methodology are envisioned to facilitate efforts in controlling reactivity and engineering properties of complex chemical processes, such as the solid electrolyte interphase in lithium-ion batteries.
