Activating the FeS (001) Surface for CO2 Adsorption and Reduction through the Formation of Sulfur Vacancies: A DFT-D3 Study

Nelson Y. Dzade et al.

Summary: The study explores the activation of CO2 on a defective FeS (001) surface with sulfur vacancies, revealing highly active Fe sites created by these vacancies. The calculated adsorption energies suggest that CO2 molecules outcompete H2O and H-2 molecules for the exposed active Fe sites. The CO2 molecule gains charge from interacting surface Fe ions, leading to activation of C-O bonds and unveiling the reaction and activation energy barriers involved in CO2 hydrogenation reactions to form CO and H2O species.
