Acceptability of 12 fortified balanced energy protein supplements - Insights from Burkina Faso

Leslie Jones et al.

Summary: The study found that pregnant women prefer sweet over salty/savoury products and are more inclined towards products they are familiar with, while also being sensitive to product odours. Although household food sharing practices may impact supplement use, most women denied any intention to share the products.

Within-Person Variation in Nutrient Intakes across Populations and Settings: Implications for the Use of External Estimates in Modeling Usual Nutrient Intake Distributions

Caitlin D. French et al.

Summary: Determining the proportion of a population at risk of inadequate or excessive nutrient intake is crucial in nutrition intervention programs. WIV:total values vary across populations, requiring careful consideration when estimating prevalence of nutrient inadequacy. Collection of multiple days of intake data is recommended for accurate estimation in population dietary studies.

Standard Minimum Dietary Diversity Indicators for Women or Infants and Young Children Are Good Predictors of Adequate Micronutrient Intakes in 24-59-Month-Old Children and Their Nonpregnant Nonbreastfeeding Mothers in Rural Burkina Faso

Loty Diop et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of two standard food group scores and related dichotomous indicators to predict the adequacy of micronutrient intake in rural Burkinabe children and women. The results showed that FGS-10 performed better than FGS-7 in predicting micronutrient adequacy. The MDD-W and MDD-IYC indicators were effective in predicting adequacy in children and nonpregnant nonbreastfeeding women, with a 4-group cutoff for FGS-10 providing a better balance between sensitivity, specificity, and classification accuracy.

Home consumption of two fortified balanced energy protein supplements by pregnant women in Burkina Faso

Brenda de Kok et al.

Summary: The study found that both supplements were well accepted, with high compliance rates (>99.6%) and overall appreciation scores (>6 out of 7) for both supplements. There was a slight preference for the vanilla biscuit in the final weeks of the study. Qualitative findings indicated that perceived health benefits, support from household members, and educational messages from health professionals were important factors influencing acceptance and compliance.

Effect of balanced energy-protein supplementation during pregnancy and lactation on birth outcomes and infant growth in rural Burkina Faso: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Katrien Vanslambrouck et al.

Summary: Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is crucial to both mother and child, and maternal malnutrition can lead to poor birth outcomes. The MISAME-III project in rural Burkina Faso aims to improve birth outcomes and infant growth by testing a balanced energy-protein (BEP) supplement during pregnancy and lactation. The study protocol involves four study groups and primary outcomes include small-for-gestational age at birth and length-for-age z-score at 6 months of age.
