The proposed mechanism for the diffusion of faceted pores or solid inclusions by the nucleation of a critical terrace was critically analyzed and further developed in this study. A more accurate approach based on classical theory of critical nucleation applied to crystal surfaces was used. The new model was extended to analyze the migration of faceted inclusions under irradiation conditions, particularly in nanosized oxide particles in oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic/martensitic steels.
The mechanism of diffusion of faceted pores or solid inclusions due to the nucleation of a critical terrace, proposed by Willerz and Shewmon for the interpretation of their experimental observations, was critically analysed and further developed using a more accurate approach based on the classical theory of critical nucleation, applied to the crystal surface. The new model was extended to analyse the migration of faceted inclusions under irradiation conditions, in particular, it was applied to nanosized oxide particles in oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic/martensitic steels.
