The specific pattern of retinal nerve fiber layer thinning in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lele Huang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on peripapillar nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thinning in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, finding a specific pattern of thinning with the inferotemporal sector being most affected and the nasal quadrant being least affected.

Retinal Thickness Predicts the Risk of Cognitive Decline in Parkinson Disease

Ane Murueta-Goyena et al.

Summary: The study showed that measuring parafoveal GCIPL thickness with retinal optical coherence tomography can be a potential tool to monitor neurodegeneration and predict cognitive decline risk in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease over time.

Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration in Various Forms of Parkinsonism-Similarities and Differences

Dariusz Koziorowski et al.

Summary: Parkinsonian syndromes, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy body, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and multiple system atrophy, share common features like neuronal loss and accumulation of misfolded proteins. These diseases are influenced by genetic factors and environmental toxins, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress.

Central retina changes in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lele Huang et al.

Summary: The central retina thickness, the combination of ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer thickness, and nerve fiber layer thickness were significantly decreased in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there was no significant difference in the thickness of the inner nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, and outer nuclear layer between the eyes of PD patients and controls. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression results were consistent with the main findings.
