Associations between winter atmospheric teleconnections in drought and haze pollution over Southwest China

Yuling Hu et al.

Summary: In the early 21st century, Southwest China frequently experienced extreme droughts and severe haze pollution events. This study investigates the associations between the atmospheric teleconnections of winter drought and winter haze pollution over SWC. The results show that winter precipitation and winter haze days had three major fluctuations from 1959 to 2016, with associations to atmospheric circulation patterns and sea surface temperatures contributing to the occurrence of haze pollution events.

Tracking seasonal and monthly drought with GRACE-based terrestrial water storage assessments over major river basins in South India

K. Satish Kumar et al.

Summary: The study analyzed various drought indices in four river basins in South India and found correlations among them. Among the four basins, drought in the Krishna Basin lasted the longest. CCDI and GRACE-DSI indices are effective for examining and evaluating drought conditions at the river basin scale.

Comparative evaluation of drought indices for monitoring drought based on remote sensing data

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the applicability of different drought indices for monitoring drought events in China. It found that VCI and TCI are better for monitoring long-term drought conditions, while SPI-1 has a higher correlation with PCI for short-term drought monitoring. SMCI has better correlation with short-term in situ drought index. Correlations with combined drought indices were better than with single drought indices.

Performance and relationship of four different agricultural drought indices for drought monitoring in China's mainland using remote sensing data

Tehseen Javed et al.

Summary: Increasing frequency and intensity of extreme drought events have harmful effects on the environment, ecosystem, and agricultural productivity. This study utilized remote sensing data to derive various drought indices and found that MSDI showed better performance for monitoring agricultural drought in China's mainland. The temporal patterns of VHI anomaly were similar to relative soil moisture and slightly different from precipitation, with MSDI showing the best spatial match with VHI.
