The Lys 280 → Gln mutation mimicking disease-linked acetylation of Lys 280 in tau extends the structural core of fibrils and modulates their catalytic properties

Harish Kumar et al.

Summary: Amyloid fibrillar aggregates isolated from the brains of patients with neurodegenerative diseases often have post-translational modifications (PTMs). The impact of PTMs, such as acetylation at Lys 280, on the structure and propagation of tau aggregates is complex and not fully understood. Studying the kinetics of seeded aggregation and conformational conversion of tau proteins with and without the K280Q mutation provides insights into how acetylation at Lys 280 may affect tau aggregate propagation in brain cells.
