Summary: This study reviewed readmission patterns of 19 COVID-19 patients in Rhode Island, finding that readmitted patients had a higher burden of comorbidities and reasons for readmission early on were more likely COVID-19 related, while later readmissions were due to other reasons.

Summary: COVID-19 reinfections could complicate potential vaccine development and maintain global virus pockets. Clinical relapse cases occur at a shorter time frame compared to non-relapse cases, based on patient data analysis.

Summary: During the COVID-19 surge in New York City, lenient discharge criteria in conjunction with remote monitoring after discharge were associated with a rate of early readmissions after COVID-related hospitalizations that was comparable to the rate of readmissions after other reasons for hospitalization before the COVID pandemic.

Summary: This study found that the 30-day readmission rate for COVID-19 survivors was 4.5%, mainly due to COVID-19 related complications. Patients with a peak serum creatinine level of >= 1.29 mg/dL during hospitalization had a 2.4 times increased risk of readmission.

A systematic review on the recurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus: frequency, risk factors, and possible explanations

Seyed Mohammad Piri et al.

Summary: The study found a notable risk of disease recurrence in recovered patients, with a recurrence rate reported between 2.3% and 21.4%. Younger patients seemed to be more affected by the recurrence. After the second course of the disease, the severity decreased or remained unchanged in 97.3% of cases. Potential reasons for recurrence include reactivation of the previous disease, reinfection with the same virus, and false negatives.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of discharged COVID-19 patients retesting positive for RT-PCR

Xiangying Ren et al.

Summary: With the increasing number of discharged COVID-19 patients, there has been a rise in cases where retesting during the recovery period shows positive results, posing a new public health challenge globally. Most retested positive patients exhibit mild or asymptomatic symptoms, warranting more attention to severe cases, elderly patients, and those with comorbidities.

Case Reports of COVID 19 Recurrence

Panagiota Caralis

Summary: A case series of 7 patients with COVID-19 recurrence is reported, with an average of 94.9 days between initial presentation and recurrence. Most patients were asymptomatic in the second episode and were incidentally found during prescreen for procedures. The subsequent positive PCR tests led to cancellations of clinic, procedures, surgery, and impacted patients' home and employment status. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and outcomes of these recurrences.

Thirty-day readmission rate of COVID-19 patients discharged from a tertiary care university hospital in Turkey: an observational, single-center study

Summary: The study revealed a 7.1% 30-day readmission rate for mild and moderate severity COVID-19 patients, with a median readmission time of 8.1 days. Some patients with malignancy and hypertension experienced readmission, and two patients in this group developed sepsis and died during the hospital stay. Further comprehensive studies are needed to explore the causes and predictors of COVID-19 readmissions.
