Failure analysis of delaminated carbon/epoxy composite under pure bending: validation with numerical analysis

Phaneendra Kumar Kopparthi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of induced delamination on the flexural performance of CFRP composites, using both finite element models and experimental validation. The results show that delamination significantly reduces the flexural strength and stiffness of the composite materials.

Summary: The dynamic failure of a 30-ply curved unidirectional CFRP laminate under quasi-static moment/axial combined loading was numerically investigated. Dynamic delamination initiated at the maximum radial stress location, with crack propagation observed to be intersonic in the arm regions.

The effect of staggered matrix crack induced delamination growth on the mechanical properties of cross-ply laminates

Sepideh Rezaei Jafari et al.

Summary: This study investigated delamination cracks induced from staggered matrix cracks in cross-ply laminates, using a newly developed energy-based analytical model. The model accurately predicted laminate stiffness and strain energy release rate, with results matching well with finite element analysis data. The findings demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the developed model.

Effect of gap and overlap fiber placement defects on the delamination behavior of L-shaped composite laminates

Shimeng Qian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of automated fiber placement on curved laminates, finding that introducing gaps and overlaps in multidirectional plies has little impact on delamination-driven failure mode, but does influence the interaction behavior between inter-laminar delamination and intra-laminar matrix cracking. The experimental and numerical results showed good agreement in failure loads, out-of-plane tensile strengths, and delamination locations.

A new methodology for buckling, postbuckling and delamination growth behavior of composite laminates with delamination

Nima Shabanijafroudi et al.

Summary: The proposed methodology offers a solution for predicting the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite plates with delamination, with a focus on addressing fracture mechanics phenomena in the postbuckling regime. By utilizing a new laminate partitioning scheme and modeling sublaminates with the first-order shear deformation theory, displacement consistency near the crack tip is improved. The use of a penalty function method enforces the continuity of the displacement field across sublaminate interfaces, while the equilibrium equations are derived using the Ritz method and solved with an arc-length method.

Analysis of the influence of ply-orientation in delamination progression in composites laminates using the Serial/Parallel Mixing Theory

A. Solis et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the influence of fibre-orientation on the progression of delamination using the Serial/Parallel Mixing Theory and a continuum damage model, and validated the model with experimental results. An increase in fibre angle resulted in loss of stiffness and strength, while the difference in delamination progression along the width of the beam highlighted the need for a three-dimensional representation.
