Ab initio theory of the impact of grain boundaries and substitutional defects on superconducting Nb3Sn

Michelle M. Kelley et al.

Summary: The study revealed that clean grain boundaries without point defects can reduce the Fermi-level density of states by a factor of two, with the effect decaying back to the bulk electronic structure at a distance of about 1-1.5 nm from the boundary. Different substitutional defects near the boundary have a significant impact on the density of states, with some materials only affecting sites away from the boundary core. The research also introduced a model for local superconducting transition temperature and examined how grain boundary composition affects T-c as a function of distance from the boundary plane.
