Emergency department utilization following pediatric gastrostomy tube placement is driven by a small cohort of patients

Luis I. Ruffolo et al.

Summary: This study found that a small cohort of pediatric patients accounts for a large proportion of healthcare resource utilization following G-tube insertion, mainly due to multiple visits to the emergency department, G-tube dislodgement, and the need for more radiographic studies. Patients with high emergency department utilization were significantly associated with non-Caucasian race and the surgeon performing the procedure. Efforts should target these high-utilizer patients for additional education and integration with outpatient resources.

Implementation of a gastrostomy care bundle reduces dislodgements and length of stay

Luis I. Ruffolo et al.

Summary: Interdisciplinary teamwork and the implementation of a care bundle significantly reduced the rate of early G-tube dislodgement in pediatric patients by 47%. This approach also led to a decrease in length of stay from 15.3 to 7.1 days. Compliance with the care bundle measures was high, demonstrating the success of the initiative.
