Comparative Embryogenesis in Angiosperms: Activation and Patterning of Embryonic Cell Lineages

Thomas Dresselhaus et al.

Summary: This review provides a comparative perspective on early zygotic embryogenesis in flowering plants, focusing on processes such as maternal-to-zygotic transition and the establishment of zygotic polarity. Controversial findings regarding the maternal versus paternal contribution to early embryo development are highlighted, along with discussions on major signaling pathways, cell fate genes, and hormones in early embryogenesis. The article also addresses the lack of knowledge about embryo patterning and basic body plan establishment in angiosperms, and discusses the establishment of stem cell niches and the evolutionary aspects of plant embryo development.

Nurse cell-derived small RNAs define paternal epigenetic inheritance in Arabidopsis

Jincheng Long et al.

Summary: The study reveals the molecular mechanism of DNA methylation reprogramming in plant male germline. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) synthesized by meiocyte nurse cells establish genic methylation and safeguard genome integrity through tapetal siRNAs.

LEAFY COTYLEDON1 expression in the endosperm enables embryo maturation in Arabidopsis

Jingpu Song et al.

Summary: The research found that LEC1 expression in the endosperm is necessary and sufficient for embryo maturation, and LEC1 protein is trafficked to the embryo to activate seed maturation. These results reveal the important role of endosperm in regulating embryo development.

Endosperm development is an autonomously programmed process independent of embryogenesis

Hanxian Xiong et al.

Summary: The seeds of flowering plants contain three genetically distinct structures: the embryo, endosperm, and seed coat, which need to interact and exchange signals for coordinated growth. Embryo growth is supported by the nourishing endosperm and regulated by signals from the endosperm, while endosperm development requires communication with the embryo. The study shows that endosperm development is an autonomously organized process, independent of egg cell fertilization and embryo-endosperm communication.

The maternally expressed polycomb group gene OsEMF2a is essential for endosperm cellularization and imprinting in rice

Xiaojun Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that OsEMF2a, a rice homolog of the Arabidopsis PcG gene Embryonic Flower2 (EMF2), plays a role similar to the Fertilization-Independent Seed 2 (FIS2) in seed development. OsEMF2a deficiency delayed cellularization and caused abnormal activation of certain genes, possibly due to overproduction of cytokinin. Paternally inherited functional alleles were unable to rescue the defects caused by maternal OsEMF2a deficiency. This study suggests that OsEMF2a-mediated H3K27me3 is crucial for endosperm cellularization and genomic imprinting in rice.
