Urinary Sodium and Potassium, and Risk of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke (INTERSTROKE): A Case-Control Study

Conor Judge et al.

Summary: This study showed that both high and low urinary sodium excretion were associated with increased risk of stroke, with high sodium intake being a stronger risk factor for intracerebral hemorrhage than ischemic stroke. Urinary potassium levels were inversely and linearly associated with stroke risk, especially for ischemic stroke. The combination of moderate sodium intake and high potassium intake was associated with the lowest risk of stroke.

Levels of dietary sodium intake: diverging associations with arterial stiffness and atheromatosis

Christiana Tsirimiagkou et al.

Summary: Recent epidemiological evidence suggests a J-shaped relationship between dietary sodium intake and cardiovascular disease. In this study, moderate sodium intake was associated with lower prevalence of atheromatosis in females, but higher probability of arterial stiffness in both males and females. The findings suggest diverging effects of sodium in the two major arterial pathologies.
