Outbreak of NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic: Another nightmare

Rishma Amarsy et al.

Summary: An outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae producing the carbapenemase NDM-1 occurred in the ICU during the last COVID-19 wave, with 12 patients testing positive. While 7 were asymptomatic, 5 developed infections. The clonal origin of the strains was confirmed through resistome and in silico multilocus sequence typing, with a possible environmental reservoir identified as a contributing factor alongside difficulties in observing optimal bio-cleaning procedures due to workload and exhaustion.

Early identification and optimal management of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative infection

J. P. Bedos et al.

Summary: The study surveyed experts in carbapenem resistance across the EU and different specialties to identify similarities and differences. High levels of agreement were found for all consensus statements, particularly in early identification and optimal management of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms.

Monitoring antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater treatment: Current strategies and future challenges

Anh Q. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to human and animal health. Wastewater treatment plants can either act as a pathway for AMR spread or as a barrier to reduce the environmental release of anthropogenic AMR. State of the art ARB identification technologies have enriched ARG/ARB databases, unveiled keystone species in AMR networks, and improved the resolution of AMR dissemination models.
