Biomarkers, matrices and analytical methods targeting human exposure to chemicals selected for a European human biomonitoring initiative

Katrin Vorkamp et al.

Summary: The major purpose of human biomonitoring is to map and assess human exposure to chemicals. The European initiative HBM4EU has prioritized seven substance groups and two metals. Suitable biomarkers, human matrices, and analytical methods were selected based on scientific literature for each substance group or metal to work towards comparable European-wide data.

Determinants of exposure levels of bisphenols in flemish adolescents

Celine Gys et al.

Summary: The study monitored internal exposure to six bisphenols in urine samples of adolescents in Flanders, Belgium, finding that BPA and its alternatives BPF and BPS had high detection frequencies. Urinary BPA levels decreased in Flemish adolescents compared to a previous cycle, suggesting ongoing replacement of BPA. Determinants of exposure were identified, including sex, season, smoking behavior, parental education level, recent food consumption, and product use.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals and metabolic disorders in the liver: What if we also looked at the female side?

Brigitte Le Magueresse-Battistoni

Summary: This review highlights the association between EDCs and metabolic disorders, emphasizing the importance of sex differences in the response of metabolic organs to EDCs. The study also points out the significant differences in endocrine and metabolic aspects of the liver between males and females.

Human biomonitoring of bisphenol A along pregnancy: An exposure reconstruction of the EXHES-Spain cohort

Maria Angeles Martinez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to reconstruct the exposure to BPA in 60 pregnant women by analyzing BPA levels in urine samples. The results showed a significant decrease in urinary BPA levels during pregnancy, mainly attributed to changes in dietary habits, particularly reduced intake of canned food and drinks. Interestingly, higher citrus fruit consumption was associated with lower BPA concentrations in urine samples.

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Infectious Diseases: From Endocrine Disruption to Immunosuppression

Elikanah Olusayo Adegoke et al.

Summary: EDCs are hormonally active compounds that can have significant impacts on the development and severity of comorbidities related to COVID-19. They are also known to play a role in the disruption of the body's immune system, which could further exacerbate the risks associated with COVID-19. Adopting comprehensive methodologies to study the role of EDCs in COVID-19 risk is important for understanding the full extent of their impact.

Bisphenol A and six other environmental phenols in urine of children and adolescents in Germany - human biomonitoring results of the German Environmental Survey 2014-2017 (GerES V)

Carolin Tschersich et al.

Summary: Exposure to environmental phenols such as bisphenol A, benzophenones, 2-phenylphenol, triclosan, and triclocarban is a concern due to their endocrine disrupting properties and widespread use in consumer products. A study in Germany assessed the current body burden of these substances in a population aged 3-17, finding bisphenol A to be the most prominent phenol, followed by benzophenones. Further monitoring and efforts to reduce exposure are necessary to minimize environmental health risks.
