Plastic toys and child care articles as a source of children exposure to phthalates and other plasticisers in Saudi Arabia

Mohammed D. Y. Oteef et al.

Summary: This study is the first to investigate the presence and levels of phthalates and other plasticizers in children's toys and child care articles sold in the Saudi market. The study found that 19% of the tested products exceeded the regulated limits for phthalates. All noncompliant items were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Seasonal variation and risk assessment of microplastics in surface water of the Manas River Basin, China

Gaoliang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of microplastic pollution in the Manas River Basin in China during dry and wet seasons, revealing differences in microplastic abundance between April and July, as well as the impact of high-hazard polymers on the evaluation of microplastic contamination. The results showed that the pollution level caused by microplastic abundance in the study area was minor.

Urbanization and hydrological conditions drive the spatial and temporal variability of microplastic pollution in the Garonne River

Aline Reis de Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study quantified spatial and temporal variability of microplastic (MP) pollution in surface water across the Garonne river catchment in France. Results show that MP concentration is influenced by urbanization and hydrological conditions, with significant variation in different seasons and particle sizes. Further studies are needed to improve understanding of spatial and temporal patterns of MP pollution in freshwater ecosystems.

Quantification and composition of microplastics in the Raritan Hudson Estuary: Comparison to pathways of entry and implications for fate

Kendi Bailey et al.

Summary: The research highlights the need for comprehensive approaches to understand the accumulation patterns and entry pathways of microplastics in urbanized estuarine environments. The study found higher concentrations of 500-2000 μm microplastic particles at the mouth of the Raritan River, while 250-500 μm microplastic particles were more prevalent in the bay and coastal ocean samples. Comparison of polymer concentrations and types from different sources provided insight into potential pathways of microplastics entry into the system.

Microplastics and fibers from three areas under different anthropogenic pressures in Douro river

Joana C. Prata et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concentrations of microplastics and fibers in three different areas of the Douro river in Porto, Portugal. The results suggest that the wastewater treatment effluent and boat dock/maintenance are likely sources of high concentrations of microplastics and fiber contamination.
