The 32-year record-high surface melt in 2019/2020 on the northern George VI Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula

Alison F. Banwell et al.

Summary: In the austral summer of 2019/2020, there was an exceptional surface melt and ponding phenomenon on the northern George VI Ice Shelf, driven by sustained warm air temperatures and specific wind conditions limiting refreezing. This increased surface ponding may threaten ice shelf stability through hydrofracture initiation, especially with potential depletion of air content in response to melting.
