Reactions to messages about smoking, vaping and COVID-19: two national experiments

Anna H. Grummon et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of COVID-19 related messages on smoking and vaping behaviors. The results showed that messages highlighting traditional harms or COVID-19 harms were more effective in discouraging smoking compared to control messages. However, including both traditional and COVID-19 harms in smoking messages did not provide additional benefits. The messages affected constructs from the Tobacco Warnings Model and did not elicit reactance. For vaping, including traditional harms in messages was effective in discouraging vaping, but COVID-19 harms were not.
