Modelling segregation of bidisperse granular mixtures varying simultaneously in size and density for free surface flows

Yifei Duan et al.

Summary: DEM simulations show that segregation velocity in flowing granular materials depends linearly on shear rate and quadratically on species concentration; incorporating this into a transport model can accurately predict segregation for various particle size and density ratios; surprisingly, segregation direction can depend on local species concentration in certain scenarios.

Bridging the gap between particle-scale forces and continuum modelling of size segregation: application to bedload transport

Hugo Rousseau et al.

Summary: Gravity-driven size segregation plays a key role in mountain streams, where vertical size segregation affects river bed morphology through interactions at the particle scale. Models based on granular forces have successfully bridged the gap between grain-scale physics and continuum modeling. Investigation of granular forces reveals scaling of advection and diffusion coefficients with inertial number and proposed scaling relationships for segregation force.

Granular buoyancy in the context of segregation of single large grains in dense granular shear flows

M. P. van Schrojenstein Lantman et al.

Summary: The study provides a new micromechanical analysis that connects the microscale contact behavior to the macroscopic granular buoyancy force, supporting the existing Voronoi approximation for calculation of the buoyancy force. The findings also substantiate the decomposition of the net force into buoyancy and segregation lift, ultimately aiding the development of new models for size segregation by linking micro and macro behavior closely.

Large particle segregation in two-dimensional sheared granular flows

Tomas Trewhela et al.

Summary: The study investigates the segregation of single large intruder particles in granular materials, finding that segregation rate is influenced by size ratio and local strain rate. Larger size ratios result in faster segregation rates, while ratios closer to unity lead to stronger rotation effects.

Accurate buoyancy and drag force models to predict particle segregation in vibrofluidized beds

Mehrdad Kiani Oshtorjani et al.

Summary: This study validates the use of a generalized Archimedean formulation for modeling buoyancy force in granular systems, showing good agreement between different calculation methods. Introducing a drag model allows for accurate prediction of lift force in the presence of convection, revealing dependencies on bed particle density, intruder diameter, and vibration strength.

Theory for size segregation in flowing granular mixtures based on computation of forces on a single large particle

Anurag Tripathi et al.

Summary: In this study, the upward force on a single large particle in a granular medium flowing over an inclined plane was measured using DEM simulation. The computed force was then used to predict the flux of large particles in a binary mixture and to determine the equilibrium concentration and velocity profiles of the flowing layer. The theoretical predictions showed very good agreement with the DEM simulation results across a wide range of concentrations and inclination angles.
