Spatially evolving cascades in temporal planar jets

A. Cimarelli et al.

Summary: A new multi-dimensional statistical formalism is proposed for describing turbulence in free-shear flows, focusing on planar temporal jets. The study reveals reverse energy cascade mechanisms generating long and wide structures in the interface region, and the active role of the non-turbulent external region of the jet from an energetic perspective. The research sheds light on the unexpected paths of scale-energy flux in the combined physical/scale space and their potential impact on theoretical understanding and modeling of turbulent mixing and entrainment.
