Non-Hydrolyzable Plastics - An Interdisciplinary Look at Plastic Bio-Oxidation

Hedda Inderthal et al.

Summary: Enzymatic plastic conversion is seen as a potential alternative to traditional plastic waste management, with a focus on biodegradable plastics such as polyesters. However, there are still challenges in applying enzymatic degradation to other commercial plastics. Addressing extensive knowledge gaps and understanding the crucial impact of physicochemical factors on reactions in less well-studied plastic types are essential for expanding the application of enzymatic degradation.

In vitro degradation of low-density polyethylene by new bacteria from larvae of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella

Zahra Montazer et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of three bacterial species isolated from greater wax moth larvae to utilize low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a sole carbon source. Results showed that these bacteria could degrade LDPE and bacterial consortia were more effective in degrading LDPE than individual species. Gas chromatographic analyses revealed the presence of linear alkanes and unknown putative LDPE hydrolysis products in some bacterial culture media.

Degradation of plastic waste using stimulated and naturally occurring microbial strains

Navid Taghavi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biodegradation capability of microbial strains derived from soil, activated sludge, farm sludge, and worms' excreta on high-density polyethylene, polystyrene foam, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate under unstimulated and stimulated conditions. The most effective plastic-degrading microbes were identified as Penicillium raperi, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium glaucoroseum, and Pseudomonas sp. In the mixed condition, incubation of polyethylene with Aspergillus flavus showed the highest weight loss at 5.5%. Further analysis using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy revealed the formation of new functional groups on the treated plastics.

A novel poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-degrading actinobacterium that was isolated from plastisphere formed on marine plastic debris

Miwa Suzuki et al.

Summary: The study isolated strain OK12 from marine plastic debris, which belongs to marine species Nocardioides and has high ability to degrade poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)]. It grows best at 30 degrees C and requires NaCl for growth, while it cannot grow without NaCl. Additionally, the strain can form biofilms on the surfaces of P(3HB) and polypropylene films, aiding in the degradation of P(3HB).

Microplastics occurrence and frequency in soils under different land uses on a regional scale

Fabio Corradini et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of microplastic pollution in soils under different land uses in the central valley of Chile, with agricultural activities being a potential major source. Contrary to common belief, the distance to mining operations, roads, or urban areas did not increase the microplastic particles count.

The abundance and characteristics of microplastics in rainwater pipelines in Wuhan, China

Wenjiao Sang et al.

Summary: The study shows that urban rainwater pipelines play a significant role in transporting microplastics into freshwater, with the highest abundance found in the business district and the lowest in the campus area. Microplastics were mainly in fragment form, with particles smaller than 1 mm dominating, diverse in color, and primarily composed of polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester.

Microplastics in African ecosystems: Current knowledge, abundance, associated contaminants, techniques, and research needs

Summary: Despite Africa's leading position in plastic waste management, there is insufficient data on the extent of microplastics and their interaction with other contaminants in its ecosystems. Studies show abundance and distribution of microplastics and organic pollutants in African aquatic systems and organisms, highlighting challenges and recommending solutions for addressing microplastic pollution in Africa.

Biodegradation of polystyrene by deep-sea Bacillus paralicheniformis G1 and genome analysis

A. Ganesh Kumar et al.

Summary: In vitro biodegradation of polystyrene films by Bacillus paralicheniformis G1 isolated from deep-sea sediments of the Arabian Sea was studied in batch experiments up to 60 days. The strain degraded 34% of PS film within 60 days and its genome analysis revealed a high number of genes associated with polymer degradation. This study suggests B. paralicheniformis G1 as a potential species for PS degradation.
