Energy and exergy analysis of bio-jet fuel production from lignocellulosic biomass via aqueous conversion

Jingwen Hao et al.

Summary: The study proposed an aqueous conversion process utilizing part of lignin to generate hydrogen, which significantly increased energy and exergy efficiencies compared to the traditional process of burning all lignin as fuel. Additionally, improving the recovery rate of methanol and reducing the consumption of acid and base chemicals can enhance the cumulative exergy efficiency and renewability of bio-jet fuel production. Sensitivity analyses showed that the conversion efficiency of platform chemicals to bio-jet fuel and the consumption of stripping steam have a significant impact on energy and exergy efficiencies.

Numerical and experimental evaluation on the pooled effect of waste cooking oil biodiesel/diesel blends and exhaust gas recirculation in a twin-cylinder diesel engine

Dhinesh Balasubramanian et al.

Summary: With the increasing global concern on diesel engine exhaust emissions, biofuels serve as a better alternative for compression ignition engines, but may lead to increased nitrogen oxide emissions which are harmful to human health. Research found that B20 blend fuel is the most effective in reducing emissions, particularly with a maximum reduction of unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, smoke, and carbon dioxide emissions. Increasing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates can effectively reduce NOx emissions but may result in higher emissions of other pollutants.

Investigation of major factors that cause diesel NOx formation and assessment of energy and exergy parameters using e-diesel blends

M. N. Nabi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the key factors influencing the formation of diesel nitrogen oxides in ethanol-diesel blends using a thermodynamic model and simulation tools like GT-Power and ANSYS. Results indicated that higher in-cylinder combustion temperature, inlet temperature, injected mass, and advanced injection timing lead to increased NOx formation. Interestingly, all three ethanol blends showed lower NOx compared to neat diesel, despite minor variations in energy and exergy parameters with respect to oxygen ratio.

Influence of fish oil and waste cooking oil as post mixed binary biodiesel blends on performance improvement and emission reduction in diesel engine

S. K. Nayak et al.

Summary: The rapid depletion of natural and non-renewable resources poses a serious threat to the environment and humanity, prompting researchers to explore alternative solutions. This paper examines the performance, combustion, and emissions of a diesel engine using fish oil biodiesel and waste palm cooking oil biodiesel, with results showing similarities to diesel fuel but with higher fuel consumption and lower thermal efficiency. Additionally, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and smoke intensity decrease while nitrogen oxide increases, indicating a trade-off for better environmental sustainability and security.
