Multi-Directional Base Isolation System for Coupled Horizontal and Vertical Seismic Excitations

Summary: A new concept of a Multi-Directional Seismic Isolation (MDSI) system has been developed to improve the seismic performance of structures under coupled horizontal-vertical excitations. The system incorporates a Super-High-Damping-Rubber (SHDR) device to tune the vertical stiffness while maintaining horizontal movements. The efficiency of the proposed system has been demonstrated for different multi-story steel frames, showing significant reductions in both vertical and horizontal accelerations and resulting in decreased non-structural damage.

Experimental Analysis of the Effects of a Polyurethane Foam on Geotechnical Seismic Isolation
