Causal gravitational waves as a probe of free streaming particles and the expansion of the Universe

Anson Hook et al.

Summary: This article focuses on analyzing the low frequency end of the gravitational wave spectrum, explaining the phenomena of suppressed production of gravitational waves due to the excitation of an over-damped harmonic oscillator and their enhancement when frozen outside the horizon from a physics perspective. The differences between sub-horizon and super-horizon physics lead to distinct spectral features that can directly measure the conformal Hubble rate at which a phase transition occurred. Additionally, the presence of free-streaming particles during a phase transition affects the behavior of super-horizon modes in the spectrum, resulting in oscillatory features and a steeper decrease in the spectrum at low frequencies.

Non-Markovian open quantum system approach to the early Universe: Damping of gravitational waves by matter

M. Zarei et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new non-Markovian quantum Boltzmann equation by revising the application of the open quantum system approach to the early universe, extending it beyond the Markovian approximation, and studying irreversible processes at the macroscopic level. The equation is applicable to various processes in the early Universe, and specifically used to study the damping of gravitational waves in a medium of decoupled ultrarelativistic neutrinos. Interestingly, the intensity and linear polarization of the gravitational waves are damped, while the circular polarization is amplified in such a medium.

Fully developed relativistic turbulence

Esteban Calzetta

Summary: A simple model was used to study nonlinear phenomena in a real relativistic fluid, focusing on new types of behavior without nonrelativistic equivalents, such as an entropy cascade driven by fluctuations in the theory's tensor degrees of freedom. The von Karman-Howarth equations for this kind of turbulence were derived, along with considerations of correlations corresponding to fully developed turbulence.

Imprint of relativistic particles on the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background

L. Valbusa Dall'Armi et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effects of relativistic particles in the early Universe on the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB), showing that changes in the number of decoupled relativistic particles can shift the angular power spectrum of the SGWB. These large-angle effects provide new testable predictions for future gravitational-wave interferometers.
