Effective removal of excessive fluoride from aqueous environment using activated pods of Bauhinia variegata: Batch and dynamic analysis

D. Eunice Jayashree et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel biosorbent derived from Bauhinia variegata pods was used for defluoridation of fluoride contaminated water. Physically Treated Bauhinia and Chemically Treated Bauhinia were compared, with the latter showing higher adsorption capacity. The adsorption process was described by the Pseudo first-order model and thermodynamic parameters indicated favorable conditions. Column studies using models like Yoon-Nelson showed promising results, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1.176 mg/g achieved.

Facile synthesis of tunable rare earth based metal organic frameworks for enhanced fluoride retention

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop rare earth metal ions (REM) based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) using benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (BTC) to achieve superior fluoride adsorption. The synthesized La@BTC and Ce@BTC MOFs exhibit high defluoridation capacities and can be easily regenerated for multiple cycles. Field trial results show that REM based MOFs effectively reduce fluoride levels below the permissible limit.

Tuning microscopic structure of Al-based metal-organic frameworks by changing organic linkers for efficient phosphorus removal

Shengjian Li et al.

Summary: The study synthesized five aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks by changing the organic linker, with Al-BDC showing the highest phosphorus adsorption capacity and Al-PMA showing the lowest. The Al-MOFs are suitable for phosphorus removal from water over a wide pH range and have the potential for removing phosphorus from natural waters. The main phosphorus removal pathways were identified as electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange using the prepared Al-MOFs.

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: A novel magnetic Zr-MOF material named Ni0.6Fe2.4O4-UiO-66-PEI was synthesized for the sorption of heavy metals Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in water. The material showed good thermal stability and magnetic properties, with fast sorption kinetics following the pseudo-second-order model. It exhibited good selectivity for competing ions and held fairly good binding capacities after multiple regenerations, making it a green and environmentally-friendly option for heavy metals removal.

Hydrogeochemistry and health hazards of fluoride-enriched groundwater in the Tarim Basin, China

He Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fluoride content in groundwater and the occurrence of dental fluorosis in the Tarim Basin of China, finding that high-fluoride groundwater is mainly related to mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation, with fluoride concentrations closely linked to HCO3-, Na+, salinity, cation exchange, and evaporation. Health risk assessment shows that younger females suffer from more severe dental fluorosis.
