Use of Salivary Iodine Concentrations to Estimate the Iodine Status of Adults in Clinical Practice

Bernadette L. Dekker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the correlation between salivary iodine secretion and urinary iodine excretion, and evaluate the clinical applicability of iodine saliva measurement. Strong correlations were found between salivary and urinary iodine in adults with different daily iodine intakes, suggesting that salivary iodine measurement can be used to assess total iodine body pool, with the recommendation to correct for salivary protein or urea.

Influence of Levothyroxine With Recombinant Human Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone on Urinary Iodine Excretion Before Radioactive Iodine Administration

Kanta Fujimoto et al.

Summary: This study found that stimulation with rhTSH before radioactive iodine administration for patients with thyroid cancer significantly increased the body iodine pool compared to thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) stimulation. However, the increase in urinary iodine with the rhTSH method was smaller than expected, indicating the need for further research.
