The Greta Thunberg Effect: Familiarity with Greta Thunberg predicts intentions to engage in climate activism in the United States

Anandita Sabherwal et al.

Summary: Despite the lack of research on Greta Thunberg's impact, a study found that those more familiar with her are more likely to have higher intentions of engaging in collective actions to reduce global warming, with stronger collective efficacy beliefs mediating this relationship. The association between familiarity with Greta Thunberg, collective efficacy beliefs, and collective action intentions is present across all age groups and political ideologies but may be stronger among those who identify as more liberal. This suggests that young public figures like Greta Thunberg may play a role in motivating collective action, particularly among those with shared political ideologies.
