Alkyl carbon number limits the ring-number separation of polycyclic aromatic compounds in petroleum analysis

Saroj K. Panda et al.

Summary: The study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the limitations of achieving a clear-cut separation of alkylated aromatic compounds using normal-phase liquid chromatography. Evaluations were done with stationary phases to separate compounds based on the number of aromatic rings, revealing that the number of alkyl carbon atoms attached to the aromatic rings influenced the elution order. Molecular modeling calculations confirmed that the increase in alkyl carbon atoms increases molecular volume and impacts the separation of compounds. The counteractive role of the size exclusion mechanism was found to limit the application of normal-phase chromatography in this context.

Size exclusion chromatography of petroleum samples using amino-bonded silica phase

Saroj K. Panda et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of amino-bonded silica phase for separating petroleum components in chromatography, successfully applying the method in size exclusion chromatographic mode with an inverse linear relationship to API gravity values. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) was found to be more sensitive to changes in API gravity values compared to the number average molecular weight (Mn), indicating potential universality and applicability for optimizing refinery processes.
