Influence of stress factors on growth and pigment production in three Dunaliella species cultivated outdoors in flat-plate photobioreactors

Summary: In this study, the growth and carotenoid production of three Dunaliella species were investigated in outdoor conditions using flat-plate photobioreactors with different salt concentrations. It was found that Dunaliella sp. showed the highest growth in all treatment groups, while D. salina exhibited the highest carotenoid concentrations at high salt concentrations.

Summary: The study investigated the impact and interaction of light intensity, photoperiod, and aeration rate on biomass concentration and lutein production of Chlorella salina in a closed laboratory-scale airlift photobioreactor using the response surface method. The optimal conditions significantly increased microalgal growth rate and biomass production, while specific lutein productivity was achieved at a light cycle of 16 hours. The optimized conditions resulted in a twofold increase in biomass and lutein productivity compared to unoptimized conditions.

Static mixer proposal for tubular photobioreactors to reduce mixing energy consumption and enhance light-dark cycles

Summary: This study simulated three types of tubular PBRs with swirl flow inducing mixers using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), estimating pumping energy and mixing degree, and calculating mixing conditions and swirl flow through swirl number. Evaluation in the frequency domain with the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) revealed a significant correlation between main frequencies and average flow velocity induced by the proposed new configuration. Energy consumption results showed that the proposed mixer consumes the least energy compared to other mixers proposed previously in the literature, with added simplicity, providing cost benefits when used in tubular PBR mixing.
