Transient 2D IR spectroscopy from micro- to milliseconds

Peter Hamm

Summary: A new application of high-repetition rate, femtosecond Yb-laser/amplifier systems is introduced for transient 2D IR spectroscopy covering the time range from micro- to milliseconds. This approach combines the measurement of 2D IR spectra with the time separation from an actinic pump pulse, utilizing the high repetition rate of these lasers systems to offer high time resolution and enable the measurement of multiple 2D IR spectra. The well-studied photocycle of bacteriorhodopsin is used as a demonstration object in this proof-of-principle experiment.

Ground state properties and infrared spectra of anharmonic vibrational polaritons of small molecules in cavities

Eric W. Fischer et al.

Summary: Recent experiments and theory suggest that the properties and reactivity of molecules can be modified when placed inside a nanoscale cavity, leading to strong coupling between vibrational modes and the quantized cavity field. The formation of vibrational polaritons in cavities significantly affects molecular spectra and reactivity, with the quantum nature of these polaritons playing a key role in interpreting molecular behavior in such environments.

Nonequilibrium effects of cavity leakage and vibrational dissipation in thermally activated polariton chemistry

Matthew Du et al.

Summary: In vibrational strong coupling, the interaction between molecular vibrations and optical cavity modes can modify the kinetics of thermally activated chemical reactions. Dissipative processes introduced by VSC can accelerate internal thermalization, ultimately suppressing nonequilibrium effects in reactions outside the cavity. This phenomenon is mainly attributed to cavity decay and plays a supporting role by relaxation between polaritons and dark states.

Cavity molecular dynamics simulations of vibrational polariton-enhanced molecular nonlinear absorption

Tao E. Li et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have shown that the properties of molecules can be altered inside an optical Fabry-Perot microcavity under collective vibrational strong coupling conditions, but this phenomenon is not yet well understood theoretically. By studying the effect of the cavity environment on the nonlinear optical response of the molecular subsystem, researchers have found that a strong excitation pulse to the lower hybrid light-matter state leads to significantly enhanced molecular nonlinear absorption within the cavity. This polariton-enhanced multiphoton absorption also results in an ultrashort polariton lifetime under strong illumination. The mechanism by which energy is transferred to higher vibrationally excited dark states is expected to be observed experimentally in different molecular systems and cavities.

Angle-independent plasmonic substrates for multi-mode vibrational strong coupling with molecular thin films

Zachary T. Brawley et al.

Summary: The vibrational strong coupling of molecules to optical cavities based on plasmonic resonances has been explored recently due to the ability of plasmonic near-fields to provide strong coupling in sub-diffraction limited volumes. This work demonstrates an angle-independent plasmonic nanodisk substrate that overcomes limitations of traditional optical cavities and allows for strong coupling with all molecules on the surface, regardless of molecular orientation. The large linewidths of the plasmon resonance enable simultaneous strong coupling to two orthogonal water vibrational modes, with the Rabi splitting varying as a function of plasmon frequency and strong coupling achieved for a range of diameters.

Cavity frequency-dependent theory for vibrational polariton chemistry

Xinyang Li et al.

Summary: Recent experiments show that coupling molecules inside an optical microcavity can control chemical reactivities, specifically through the mechanism of vibrational strong coupling. The modification of chemical reactivities in VSC polariton chemistry, dependent on photon frequency, can be explained by non-Markovian dynamics and the dynamic caging effect of the reaction coordinate. This study sheds light on the suppression of reaction rates for a specific cavity frequency, reminiscent of a solvent caging effect.

Summary: For a small fraction of hot CO2 molecules immersed in a liquid-phase CO2 thermal bath, forming collective vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between the C=O asymmetric stretch of CO2 molecules and a cavity mode accelerates hot-molecule relaxation. The acceleration is resonantly dependent on the cavity mode detuning, cooperatively dependent on Rabi splitting, and collectively scales with the number of hot molecules.
