Association of brain white matter lesions with arterial stiffness assessed by cardio-ankle vascular index. The Beijing Vascular Disease Evaluation STudy (BEST)

Summary: The study quantified the cross-sectional association between brain white matter lesions and arterial stiffness (assessed by the cardio-ankle vascular index) in a population of 1176 adults. It was found that arterial stiffness, age, sex, systolic blood pressure, and stroke were independently associated with the presence of brain white matter lesions, suggesting the need for longitudinal studies to predict if arterial stiffness can predict such lesions.

Summary: This study found that faster pulse wave velocity (PWV) is associated with the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), even after adjusting for time-dependent changes. The cardio-ankle vascular index is also associated with CVD, although the associations are less clear compared to PWV. BaPWV is a good risk marker for the incidence of CVD.
