Variability in the fundamental versus realized niches of North American mangroves

Remi Bardou et al.

Summary: This study compared the fundamental and realized thermal niches of two mangrove species on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America. The results showed that there were slight differences in the performance of the two mangrove species on different coasts. Physiological thresholds closely matched realized distributions for both black and red mangroves on the Atlantic coast, while Pacific red mangroves were surprisingly freeze tolerant. The experiments indicated that mangroves can tolerate colder water temperatures than currently experienced at either range limit.

Biomarker constraints on Mediterranean climate and ecosystem transitions during the Early-Middle Miocene

Aura C. Salocchi et al.

Summary: Investigations into paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic variations in the Mediterranean region during the Miocene Burdigalian-Langhian interval have shown evidence of vegetation adapting to arid conditions and ecosystem evolution. Strong similarities between biomarker records from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic suggest a constant connection between the two regions from approximately 19 million years ago to around 14.5 million years ago.
