Beyond antibacterials - exploring bacteriophages as antivirulence agents

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: Research on the importance of bacteriophages in combating bacterial infections is increasing, with the trade-off phenomenon potentially resulting in lower fitness and increased sensitivity to antibiotics. While it may be difficult to prevent the evolution of phage resistance, the trade-off phenomenon holds potential for antibacterial therapy.

Cardiotropic Isolates of Listeria monocytogenes with Enhanced Vertical Transmission Dependent upon the Bacterial Surface Protein InlB

Nicole M. Lamond et al.

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes serious infections in pregnant women, with the cardiac isolate 07PF0776 showing enhanced ability to target cardiac tissue. This isolate exhibited increased transmission to fetuses and placentas, as well as enhanced invasion of trophoblast cells compared to the noncardiotropic strain 10403S. Overexpression of InlB on the bacterial surface led to increased invasion of placenta and fetus, highlighting the important role of InlB in vertical transmission of L. monocytogenes.

Structural basis for recognition of bacterial cell wall teichoic acid by pseudo-symmetric SH3b-like repeats of a viral peptidoglycan hydrolase

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: This study reveals the molecular interaction mechanism between the Listeria phage endolysin domain CBD500 and its cell wall teichoic acid (WTA) ligands, showing that 3' O-acetylated GlcNAc residues are the key epitope recognized by CBD. The findings provide insights into a previously unknown recognition mechanism that phage endolysin specifically targets WTA, suggesting a flexible model for regulating endolysin specificity.
