Oriented ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene/gold nanocomposites: Electrical conductivity and chain entanglement dynamics

S. X. Drakopoulos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the entanglement dynamics of uniaxially-oriented, disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene nanocomposites modified with gold nanoparticles during the transition to melt state using dielectric spectroscopy. It is found that the formation of entanglements leads to a decrease in dc conduction, with a stronger decrease as the draw ratio increases. Additionally, the presence of a sharp peak in the absence of dc conductivity is attributed to the dipolar contribution of the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars interfacial polarization between the gold nanoparticles and the polymer chains.
