Bioerosion in Ostrea lamellosa shells from the Messinian of the Tafna basin (NW Algeria)

Mohammed Nadir Naimi et al.

Summary: This study reports the first discovery of bioerosional trace fossils in Algeria, describing three ichnotaxa found in the shells during the Messinian period. The study also reveals the different phases of the Messinian transgression across the Souk el Khemis shoal through specimen analysis.

Summary: This research study describes 27 ichnospecies belonging to 18 ichnogenera for the first time from the lower Miocene Tiaret Marl Formation in north-western Algeria. The ichnofacies identified in the sandstones represent a deep-sea fan environment, which is typical of marine bathyal depth.

The trace fossil Cardioichnus planus from the lower Miocene of Algeria: the first record from Africa and a probable endemic tracemaker

Mohammed Nadir Naimi et al.

Summary: Abundant Cardioichnus planus SMITH & CRIMES, 1983 have been reported for the first time from Africa, specifically in lower Miocene deep-marine deposits near Tiaret in northwestern Algeria. The morphological features of the trace, along with the spatial interrelationships between Cardioichnus and echinoids in the area, suggest that the endemic spatangoid Echinocardium nummuliticum PERON & GAUTHIER, 1885 is the tracemaker of the studied C. planus. Cardioichnus is known to have a wide geographic and environmental distribution from the upper Jurassic to the Pleistocene.
