Risk factors for depression and anxiety in healthcare workers deployed during the COVID-19 outbreak in China

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the depression and anxiety status of healthcare workers in China during the outbreak of COVID-19. Findings showed that a significant proportion of healthcare workers experienced moderate/severe depression and anxiety symptoms during the outbreak. Increased workload, negative coping style, and job burnout were identified as independent risk factors for anxiety and depression in healthcare workers. More attention is needed to safeguard the mental health of frontline healthcare workers during public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Women were more likely to experience anxiety symptoms, while caregivers with preexisting mental disorders were at higher risk of depressive symptoms. Caregivers who preferred positive media information had a lower risk of sleep problems.
