The Glymphatic System: A Review of the Challenges in Visualizing its Structure and Function with MR Imaging

Shinji Naganawa et al.

Summary: The central nervous system was previously thought to lack lymphatic vessels, but the recently hypothesized glymphatic system has challenged this belief. This system clears waste products from the brain and regulates immunity, and its impairment may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. In vivo MR imaging studies have been used to visualize and understand the function and structure of the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatics. This review summarizes these studies and discusses their significance, limitations, and future directions.

Assessment of the DTI-ALPS Parameter Along the Perivascular Space in Older Adults at Risk of Dementia

Christopher E. Steward et al.

Summary: This study investigated a potential biomarker for glymphatic activity using diffusion MRI imaging, finding significant correlations between DTI-ALPS and cognitive status in the right hemisphere. Further research is needed to determine the utility of the DTI-ALPS index in larger elderly cohorts and its relationship to glymphatic activity.

Glymphatic clearance function in patients with cerebral small vessel disease

Relationship between Time-dependent Signal Changes in Parasagittal Perivenous Cysts and Leakage of Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents into the Subarachnoid Space

Shinji Naganawa et al.

Summary: The study identified an association between signal changes over time in perivenous cystic structures and leakage of GBCA in patients with suspected endolymphatic hydrops, suggesting further research is needed to clarify the impact of these cystic structures on the brain's waste clearance system.

Shinji Naganawa et al.

Summary: The time course of gadolinium-based contrast agent distribution after intravenous single-dose administration can be evaluated through 3D-real IR imaging in CSF spaces and brain parenchyma using MR fingerprinting. Typically, signal intensity peaks at 4 hours and decreases significantly by 24 hours.
