Structural comparison of two ferritins from the marine invertebrate Phascolosoma esculenta

Tinghong Ming et al.

Summary: Two novel ferritins from the marine invertebrate Phascolosoma esculenta were presented with crystal structures, showing a cage-like hollow shell symmetry and conservation of ferroxidase center and threefold channels. Subtle structural differences in putative nucleation sites suggest possible routes of metal ion movement, while significant diversity was observed in electrostatic potential of channels between the two ferritins. These crystal structures may serve as references for further studies on iron-storage mechanism in marine invertebrate ferritins.

Whole-Body Regeneration in Sponges: Diversity, Fine Mechanisms, and Future Prospects

Alexander Ereskovsky et al.

Summary: Sponges, as basal metazoans, exhibit diverse regenerative processes with changes in organism polarity during regeneration. Different species of sponges undergo varying morphogenetic processes after similar operations. Scarce data is available regarding the cellular mechanisms and molecular regulation of whole-body regeneration in sponges, but the common morphogenetic and cellular basis within a single species makes them highly accessible for future studies on regeneration processes.

Carbonic Anhydrases: An Ancient Tool in Calcareous Sponge Biomineralization

Oliver Voigt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbonic anhydrase (CA) gene repertoire of different species of calcareous sponges using transcriptomic analysis, phylogenetics, and in situ hybridization. It reveals that the last common ancestor of Calcarea had four ancestral CAs with defined subcellular localizations and functions. The evolution of membrane-bound and secreted CAs involved gene duplications and losses, whereas mitochondrial/cytosolic and non-catalytic CAs are orthologous genes.
