The Potent Antioxidant MitoQ Protects Against Preeclampsia During Late Gestation but Increases the Risk of Preeclampsia When Administered in Early Pregnancy

Yike Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that while MitoQ administration in late gestation could protect mice from hypertension and kidney damage induced by RUPP, it exacerbated the PE phenotype when given in early gestation, indicating the necessity of mild oxidative stress for trophoblast proliferation, invasion, and migration.

Oxygen and development of the human placenta

Graham J. Burton et al.

Summary: Development of the human placenta occurs in varying oxygen concentrations throughout gestation, with early placenta considered "hypoxic" despite heavy glycolytic metabolism. Trophoblast proliferation is promoted by the low-oxygen environment, leading to formation of the cytotrophoblastic shell. Complications such as pre-eclampsia may be related to oxidative stress and malperfusion, requiring further research on oxygen regulation of placental development.

Summary: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy disease exclusive to humans, characterized by gestational hypertension, proteinuria, oxidative stress, and imbalance between NO and ROS production, possibly due to placental abnormalities and oxidative stress.

Benefits of α-lipoic acid in high-risk pregnancies (Review)

Aida Petca et al.

Summary: Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural molecule that must be provided from exogenous sources and has direct and indirect antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. It reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines levels and increases the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines. ALA also inhibits cyclooxygenase 2 and decreases the secretion of prostaglandin E2 and nitrogen oxide, reducing the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester of pregnancy.
