Abscisic acid regulates secondary cell-wall formation and lignin deposition in Arabidopsis thaliana through phosphorylation of NST1

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that SnRK2 kinases regulate the thickness and lignification of secondary cell walls in Arabidopsis by phosphorylating the NST1 transcription factor. Loss of NST1 function leads to a lack of SCWs in the stem, indicating the importance of NST1 in SCW formation.

Genome-wide association studies reveal the coordinated regulatory networks underlying photosynthesis and wood formation in Populus

Mingyang Quan et al.

Summary: This study utilized a systems genetics approach to investigate the genetic architecture and regulatory pathways of photosynthesis and wood properties in Populus tomentosa, revealing coordinated regulatory networks for these two processes. A total of 222 significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms and 74 epistatic interactions were detected, providing insights into the transcriptional regulatory networks of candidate genes coordinating photosynthesis and wood properties. Furthermore, heterologous expression experiments demonstrated the regulatory roles of two pleiotropic genes in balancing photosynthesis and wood formation, which could aid in genetic breeding and molecular design in trees.

Synergies and Entanglement in Secondary Cell Wall Development and Abiotic Stress Response in Trees

Heather D. Coleman et al.

Summary: A major challenge in sustainable food, fuel, and fiber production is the simultaneous genetic improvement of yield, biomass quality, and resilience to environmental stress and climate change. Alterations in wood properties for specific end uses can have negative effects on growth and stress tolerance. Understanding the diverse roles of secondary cell wall genes is crucial for improving fast-growing trees facing perennial challenges.
