Protective effects of curcumin towards anxiety and depression-like behaviors induced mercury chloride

Gasem Mohammad Abu-Taweel et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that curcumin has protective effects against the toxicity of inorganic mercury in developing mice offspring, reducing behavioral and biochemical changes caused by HgCl2. This suggests curcumin as a promising agent for alleviating HgCl2 toxicity, though further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Curcumin ameliorates mercuric chloride-induced liver injury via modulating cytochrome P450 signaling and Nrf2/HO-1 pathway

Siwen Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that curcumin can protect the liver from mercuric chloride-induced damage through various mechanisms, including reducing levels of liver enzymes, suppressing inflammatory damage and oxidative burst, promoting antioxidant pathway activity, and modulating CYP450 signaling. Additionally, curcumin enhances Nrf2-mediated HO-1 expression in liver cells, providing protection against cell death induced by HgCl2.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
