Combustion Behavior and Thermal Degradation Properties of Wood Impregnated with Intumescent Biomass Flame Retardants: Phytic Acid, Hydrolyzed Collagen, and Glycerol

Luming Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized a water-soluble flame retardant to enhance the flame retardancy of wood, improving combustion safety performance and maximizing the limiting oxygen index and weight gain. The flame retardant formed an expansive layer after heating, showing improved fire performance and residue compared to untreated wood. The PHG/wood exhibited good carbon-forming performance and a high degree of graphitization after combustion, confirming the effectiveness of PHG as a flame retardant for wood.

Extraction, characterization and chemical functionalization of phosphorylated cellulose derivatives from Giant Reed Plant

Anass Ait Benhamou et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose microfibers and cellulose nanocrystals with phosphoric groups on their surfaces were prepared by phosphorylation of cellulose extracted from Giant Reed plant. The phosphorylated samples showed differences in charge content and crystallinity depending on the phosphorous agent used. The phosphorylated microfibers and nanocrystals exhibited specific morphologies and thermal properties, suggesting potential new applications.

Improving the Flame Retardancy of Bamboo Slices by Coating With Melamine-Phytate via Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Peng Lin et al.

Summary: Bamboo, a rich natural resource in the Asia Pacific, was treated with melamine and phytic acid using layer-by-layer assembly technology to improve its flame retardancy properties. Two-dimensional melamine-phytate nanoflakes were successfully formed and deposited on the bamboo surface, leading to the earlier degradation of bamboo into char. The peak heat release rates of treated bamboo slices were significantly reduced, showcasing the effectiveness of the MP coating in promoting the formation of thermally stable char for improved flame retardancy and flame spread suppression.
