Update: Innate Lymphoid Cells in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Weiwei Luo et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and non-specific condition that may be caused by dysbiosis, genetic factors, and environmental factors. Recent studies have identified a new type of lymphocytes, called innate lymphoid cells, which could offer novel approaches for the treatment of IBD by influencing intestinal mucosal homeostasis.

NK cells and ILCs in tumor immunotherapy

Simona Sivori et al.

Summary: Innate immune cells, especially NK cells, play an important role in tumor immunotherapy by controlling tumor growth and metastasis. Various approaches have been developed, such as using IL-15 to improve NK cell function and utilizing NK cell engagers to activate NK cells. Additionally, NK cells may express inhibitory checkpoints like PD-1, which can be targeted for therapeutic use against certain tumors.

Dietary fiber metabolites regulate innate lymphoid cell responses

Ali Sepahi et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) can support the expansion of ILCs through G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), with a primary impact on intestinal ILC populations but potential effects on ILC responses in other tissues. The expression of SCFA receptors by ILCs is induced by SCFAs, which facilitate the activation of multiple signaling pathways important for cell proliferation.

The microbiome in inflammatory bowel diseases: from pathogenesis to therapy

Sheng Liu et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a global disease with accelerating incidence worldwide, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota has been consistently associated with IBD. Some alterations in microbiome may have protective or causative effects on IBD. Therapeutic approaches targeting microbiome are a promising strategy for alleviating and curing IBD.

Crohn's Disease Is Associated With Activation of Circulating Innate Lymphoid Cells

Summary: The study revealed increased frequency of ILCp expressing NKp44 and CD56 activation markers in CD patients, higher HLA-DR expression on ILC1 and ILC2 in CD compared to HC, and upregulation of SLAMF1 on ILC2 in CD and UC samples compared to HC. In active CD, SLAMF1(+) ILC2 frequency was negatively correlated with disease severity.

Berberine in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: A possible pathway through Tuft cells

Xinyu Xiong et al.

Summary: Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease influenced by genetic factors, intestinal immune status, and intestinal microbial homeostasis. Intestinal epithelial barrier defect plays a crucial role in the development of UC. Berberine, extracted from traditional Chinese medicine, may be a potential treatment for UC by activating the immune pathway.

M1 Macrophage exosomes MiR-21a-5p aggravates inflammatory bowel disease through decreasing E-cadherin and subsequent ILC2 activation

Jiaxi Lu et al.

Summary: Abnormal immune regulation is a key feature of the pathogenic mechanism of ulcerative colitis, with macrophages and ILC2s playing important roles, particularly in decreased E-cadherin expression. The study found that increased miR-21a-5p expression in peritoneal exosomes correlates negatively with E-cadherin expression, and that miR-21a-5p is derived mainly from M1 macrophages, with KLRG1 promoting excessive ILC2 activation in UC. These findings provide molecular targets and a theoretical basis for understanding and improving the treatment of UC.

The Role of Natural Killer Cells in Autoimmune Diseases

Umut Can Kucuksezer et al.

Summary: NK cells are a subset of innate lymphoid cells that play important roles in anti-tumor immune responses and immune regulation, with different subgroups showing cytotoxic functions or cytokine production. Their activation is influenced by a variety of factors, including cell surface receptors and cytokines, and their dysregulation can contribute to various immune-mediated diseases. Further research on NK cell biology and their potential therapeutic applications is necessary for better understanding and treatment of inflammatory disorders.

CCR8 Signaling via CCL1 Regulates Responses of Intestinal IFN-γ Producing Innate Lymphoid CelIs and Protects From Experimental Colitis

Le Kang et al.

Summary: The complex immune cell network in intestinal inflammation involves the chemokine receptor CCR8, which plays a protective role in the gut through its interaction with the chemotactic ligand CCL1. This pathway is linked to the function of intestinal innate lymphoid cells producing IFN-gamma. Modulating this regulatory circuit may present a new strategy for treating inflammatory bowel disease.
