Sex differences in uterine artery Doppler during gestation in pregnancies complicated by placental dysfunction

Leah Paranavitana et al.

Summary: The study found that there is no difference in uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) between female and male fetuses in normal pregnancies, but in complicated pregnancies (preeclampsia, preterm birth, or fetal growth restriction), the trajectory of PI varies by fetal sex, with male fetuses showing a more progressive deterioration in uteroplacental perfusion over gestation. This highlights the importance of considering fetal sex when interpreting hemodynamic markers of placental maturation, as observed through changes in uterine artery PI.

The Involvement of Cell Adhesion Molecules, Tight Junctions, and Gap Junctions in Human Placentation

Enoch Appiah Adu-Gyamfi et al.

Summary: Placentation is crucial for the success of pregnancy, and is regulated by molecules such as cell adhesion molecules, tight junctions, and gap junctions. Dysregulated expression of these molecules during placentation may lead to obstetric complications. This highlights the potential of these molecules as therapeutic targets for diseases related to malplacentation.

Examining Sex Differences in the Human Placental Transcriptome During the First Fetal Androgen Peak

Amy E. Braun et al.

Summary: Sex differences in human placenta exist from early pregnancy to term, with 322 transcripts differentially expressed between male and female CV from 11 to 16 weeks. Contrary to expectations, the difference between male and female expression was more pronounced at earlier gestational ages, with females showing upregulation in extracellular matrix components and X-linked genes, while males exhibited upregulation of transcripts related to chromosome 19. Some of the highly differentially expressed autosomal genes were found to regulate immune cell interactions. This study provides insights into sex-linked gene expression in developing human placenta and sets the foundation for understanding the mechanistic origins of sex differences in prenatal development.
