Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese children and adolescents: a role for nutrition?

Luisa Bonsembiante et al.

Summary: NAFLD in children is closely related to factors such as obesity, nutrition, and lifestyle, with lifestyle modifications for weight loss remaining the main treatment approach. Further research is needed on the use of dietary supplements for NAFLD management.

Untargeted metabolomics as a diagnostic tool in NAFLD: discrimination of steatosis, steatohepatitis and cirrhosis

Mario Masarone et al.

Summary: The study utilized metabolomics analysis to differentiate metabolic profiles of different stages in NAFLD patients, revealing key metabolites that could potentially serve as biomarkers for disease progression. Additionally, the use of an ensemble machine learning model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting clinical stages of NAFLD.

Remodeling Lipids in the Transition from Chronic Liver Disease to Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Israa T. Ismail et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a poor prognosis and is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. This study analyzed lipid alterations in blood and tissues of HCC patients compared to healthy controls and those with chronic liver disease. The research identified significant changes in lipid composition, particularly in triacylglycerides and phosphatidylcholines, between healthy controls, CLD patients, and HCC patients. These findings may have implications for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of HCC.

Metabolic alterations and vulnerabilities in hepatocellular carcinoma

Daniel G. Tenen et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, with HCC as the major subtype, is ranked as the cancer with the second highest number of cancer-related deaths globally, accounting for 85% of total cases. The metabolism of HCC cells is highly dysregulated compared to normal hepatocytes due to the liver being the primary site of numerous metabolic processes in the body. Understanding the metabolic alterations caused by HCC and the underlying mechanisms is crucial for diagnostic and therapeutic advancements in the treatment of HCC.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
