New modified Nafion-bisphosphonic acid composite membranes for enhanced proton conductivity and PEMFC performance

Summary: The study focused on the development of new Nafion membranes by incorporating aryl- or azaheteroaromatic bisphosphonate compounds as dopants, resulting in enhanced proton conductivity properties compared to commercial Nafion membranes. These doped membranes showed improved performance in fuel cells at different temperatures, with a maximum power output of around 383 mW cm(-2) at 70 degrees C. The membranes also demonstrated potential advantages in restricting gas crossover, as indicated by higher open circuit potentials compared to Nafion membranes under the same conditions.

Results showed a decrease in corrosion rate and the formation of a thick corrosion layer composed of various iron oxides. The external corrosion product mainly consisted of magnetite and siderite, with a homogeneous distribution of elements across the cross-sectional of the corrosion layer.

The composition of the nitride coatings, including TiN, TiNxOy, and TiO2 phases, can be tuned by adjusting the prepared temperatures, affecting the corrosion resistance and interfacial contact resistance of the samples. Samples nitrided at 1000 degrees C exhibit the best combination of corrosion resistance and interfacial contact resistance, showing superior long-term stability in a simulated PEMFC cathode environment.

The passive film on 316L SS can protect it from further corrosion, with maximal corrosion resistance at a plastic strain of 20%. The XPS results show that the Cr2O3 content in the passive film reaches a maximum at 20% plastic strain and increases with higher strain rates.
